Like everything in the past year the 2021 Cheat River Massacre-ence will be a bit different.  Two important changes:  Registration is Online Only and 2 Heats will be organized, both changes to maintain safe distances on and off the water and make the race happen.

Dedication to Rick Gusic will be planned for 2022 so family and friends can join in the celebration of the man that brought together the largest mass start.

Registration is CLOSED:

No walk ups to keep crowds down and people moving.  Thank you for understanding!  Email race coordinator Heather Rau at with questions.  You can access the 2021 ACA waiver here: ACA_adultwaiver2021_

Safety is always our #1 concern and this year is no different.  We watch out for each other from top to bottom.  Racers will be battling for position in the first 200 yds, always the most chaotic time, watch out for each other!  Stop to help if someone is in trouble, you would want them to do it for you.  If you know the Cheat you know the lines.  Use those to overcome someone safely!  Safety boaters will be staged at rapids of greater concern for additional assistance, however racing smart is good.  Know your skill level regarding the type of rapids, length of the race, and the river level on race day.

In the past, our record for safety on race day has been excellent, hence the reason why we continue to have this epic event.  Remember why we are out there…to experience the spectacular Cheat River Canyon doing what we all enjoy!!

As for spectators at the put in and take out, we are asking that you wait until next year when all can  properly cheer on the masses!

COVID-19 GUIDELINES:  We are requiring masks be worn and social distancing practiced when congregating at the put in and take out.  Staging at the start: only boaters and essential volunteers.  Carrying your boat will provide safe distance.  Staging upstream of the bridge pilings and on the water social distance to the best of your ability.  Respecting each other is how we are going to make the event safety a success.  Thank you!

The 2021 Champions will be awarded trophies after the race.  I’m estimating the ceremony to begin by 2:30 back at FOC/Laurel Highlands parking lots.  Due to the varied start times we will have to wait a little longer for the top finishers to report.

Shuttle and Parking:

Shuttle on your own using the FOC and Laurel Highlands parking lots and Jenkinsburg parking area.

To keep things moving parking and volunteer attendants will assist both at the put in and take out.
